Patterns! The Photographic Angle

17 Jan 2018 to 21 Jan 2018

Attend a free Photo Exhibition in the Q4 Building.

'Patterns' takes place over Wednesday 17th - Sunday 21st January.
10.00-15.00. Q4 Building

They surround us. We come across them every day. We have them on our clothes, we have them in our homes, we see them in nature, we walk across them, we walk past them, we walk under them, and we probably even consume them at meal times. And yet we very rarely take that much notice of them. However, there is often a hidden beauty in the smallest details that make up our world. Noticing these details can help us to get a better understanding of the world around us and can even help us to develop a new way of seeing.

Capturing something common, such as fields, shadows, flooring, the streets, buildings, a plant or even people, and looking at it in much more detail, or from a different angle, can allow us to see hidden patterns.
Exploring the hidden geometry that surrounds us, enables us to truly appreciate the way that pattern can help us to tell a story.  Focussing on different forms, structures, textures and colours is a great starting point for exploring pattern and discovering the narrative that begins to unravel.
The photographers who have work featured in this exhibition have taken nature, architecture, art, design and more as their inspiration. They have experimented with repetition, tessellation, symmetry, perspective, angles and magnification to create powerful images using visual patterns.

Sustainable Design Competition – Help us Create a Bottle Brick Design!

22 Jun 2018 to 10 Aug 2018

Help us design something for our Bottle Bricks and it could be made onsite.

Are you a budding engineer or a passionate environmentalist? Perhaps you're both!

We're looking to design as a Bottle Brick creation - and we need your help!

Our bottle bricks (also known as portable landfill devices) can be used to make benches, bird feeder tables and other structures because the density of the rubbish inside them makes them durable and weather proof.

We've been collecting bricks all summer and are starting to think about building with them - our original plan was to make a bench - but we're keen to get Quorum staff involved with planning and design - so we're open to suggestion on alternative ideas too!

Get your designs across to us by Friday 10th August to be in with a chance to see your creation come true! (Please feel free to share this competition with friends and family, young and old if someone you know would love to get involved)

Check out some fantastic creations from round the globe for inspiration.

You can read more about Earth benches and bottle bricks here.

‚ÄúStreets and their sidewalks ‚Äď the main public places of a city ‚Äď are its most vital organs‚ÄĚ
Jane Jacobs, Patron Saint of Contemporary Urbanism

One of the most interesting aspects of street photography is the candid nature with which images are captured in public places. It allows photographers to record the true state of the human condition by watching how society acts when it thinks that nobody is watching.

All of the images in this exhibition have been taken within towns and cities. They represent a contemporary record of urban life, but they are also testament to mankind’s ingenuity in adapting to new and challenging environments.

Some of our photographers have chosen to capture mundane everyday scenes that can be witnessed in any metropolitan environment. Others have approached the theme from a far more serious angle and have portrayed our cities as a political environment choosing to highlight their concerns with inequality and the importance of political activism.

Some photographs depict an emotional reaction to urban life and focus on a more romantic attachment to a location. Others have chosen to portray the drama and contrast of architectural styles and familiar architectural landmarks.

What these photographs all have in common is the fact that they provide a commentary on the reality of life in communities built to meet the needs of the industrial age.

Participating Photographers:

Marie Aldridge, Claire Atkinson, Xyza Bacani, Ian Charters, Catherine Dipper, Chau Doan, Stefanie Forbes, Wu Hao, Sheila Haycox, Gearóid Hayes, Joerg Karrenbauer, Jon Kehoe (Jaykoe), Tove Lauluten, Ray Lightfoot, Violetta Liska, Richard Mills, Zlatko Milojicic, Henning S Petersen, Yongning Qian, Suzanne Radke, Smita Sharma, Kurt Skeels, Bev Stein, Vanessa Teran, Aaron Trice,  Edgaras Vaicikevicius,  Ian Walker, Louise Ward, Maurice Wilson, Karl Wood, Katie Woore

Stream Clean!

29 Aug 2018

Help clear litter from the Letch and be rewarded with Pizza (and beer!)

Volunteers who help clear litter from the Quorum Letch will enjoy a pizza dinner complete with refreshments.

Despite the hard work of our litter pickers, rubbish builds in the long reeds of our letch. We're hosting an after work stream clean where you can help improve the space for local wildlife living nearby.

Sign up on Eventbrite here.

Protective Equipment will be provided but please dress in old clothes!

Did you know that major structural changes had to be made to the design of the park in 2009 because of the water voles found to be living in the letch? The area has been classed as a protected environmental space ever since.

This is a success message.
