Killingworth Road Closures: The Latest Updates!

A full road closure began on Killingworth Road on Thursday 20th July. This closure is in place until February 2018.

Killingworth Road Closures.

Killingworth Road in Newcastle is now closed as part of a £10m plus investment project to widen the road and install a new Metro bridge at a well-known pinch point.

This leaflet is the latest news from Newcastle City Council

Bridge closures resident letter 1 (003)

Works will include:

  • widening the road to make it safer for everyone and reduce congestion
  • moving the carriageway further from people’s homes to improve their air quality
  • installing wider pavements to make it easier for people on foot and with pushchairs or mobility issues to get around
  • installing two-way cycle lanes to make it safer for people on bikes
  • installing on-street parking for residents to improve access to their homes
  • replacing the retaining wall with improved landscaping

The closure of Killingworth Road is required to protect the public during the replacement of the Metro Bridge and the subsequent diversion of gas mains in the area as well as to facilitate the road widening scheme.

Please note, the council will also be closing Salters Bridge and Castle Farm bridge during the construction period to reduce rat-running in residential areas.

Metro Closures.

The closures coincide with 6 weeks of metro closures. From Monday 31st July to Saturday 2nd September there will be no trains between South Gosforth and Four Lane Ends or Shiremoor depending on the phase of work.
