Productivity Matters: Having healthy, happy staff works for everyone

Having a motivated workforce is good for business, but how can smaller companies promote staff wellbeing without the bigger budgets of a larger employer?

According to a workplace study for RAND Europe, healthy, highly engaged employees are, on average, up to 30 days more productive each year.

With poor health and wellbeing costing the UK economy up to £57 billion a year in lost productivity, the impact can be just as profound, whether you’re a multinational company or an SME.

I’m in. What next?

If you see the value in healthy, happy staff, it can still be a little daunting knowing what to do next. One of the best places to start is you own staff. Ask them what they would like to do and what support they might need. Think about what would motivate your staff – is it free parking, secure bike racks, free tea and coffee?  These are all things that Quorum Business Park provides as part of a business tenancy.

Quorum Business Park has regular onsite events, that cater for every age range and includes a 7-a-side football league, BBQs, jobs fairs, charity days and pop-up social events. With around 300 events each year, there’s something for everyone. Our events can be found on events calendar

This is particularly useful for smaller businesses who can tap into the events hosted on the park. Rather than having to cover the cost of suppliers, equipment or managing the events themselves, all they need is to encourage their staff to head along and make the most of them.

Our newest offering The Neon Building, is particularly amenity rich with a free to use pool table, retro games machine and coffee machine. Aimed at  occupiers taking smaller suites, it helps create an onsite community where start up tenants can benefit from help, support and best practice sharing from more established tenants.

Laura McGrath, Events and Sustainability Manager at Quorum Business Park, explains: “A recent switch in focus has seen us introduce seminars and learning events, educating both HR departments and individual members of staff.

“Events include a cancer in the workplace seminar, hosted by Macmillan, an anti-bullying workshop and free mental health at work training events.

“We encourage all businesses to share best practice and have encouraged a network of health benefits as varied as pop-up messages, oral health and chiropody.”

Recruitment and retention

People joining the workforce today, identify less with the 9 to 5 routine and have grown up with technology that blurs the lines between work and leisure time.

More flexible commuting patterns and working hours, together with a higher demand for amenities and quality of life, mean it’s important for businesses to up their offer in order to recruit and retain the best staff.

A positive working environment and a happy workforce bring tangible benefits to productivity and business performance. Many younger staff now seek out companies that take corporate responsibility seriously.

Increased volunteering and participation in charity events boost your business’ public image, while staff reap the benefits that come with the satisfaction of working for a company that cares about them and others.
